Programme Outline

The Senior Phase DYW School Coordinators deliver the Schools Employability Skills Programme which is a targeted approach for pupils who are in their final year of school and would benefit from an employability experience which will support their transition into work, training or further/higher education. We can support all pupils with a particular focus on pupils who may have additional support needs, present at risk of becoming NEET  and/or may be at risk of disengaging from education.

The offer centres on these pupils but also takes account of the needs of the employer. The programme considers the young persons’ past experience, interests and future careers aspirations in order to offer a more personal, focused and quality employability experience.

The programme aims to:

  • Meet the individual needs of each pupil

  • Prepare young people to be adaptable in a changing economy

  • Support positive and lasting outcome for all young people after school

  • Develop our young peoples’ employability skills and job awareness through an employability experience which is:

  • Flexible yet focused

  • Offers choice

  • Linked to the curriculum

  • Linked to the pupils own experience and goals.

There are 6 x Officers who are the main point of contact for schools and employers. The officers will work closely SDS, School staff and pupil support staff in each school.

The employability experience takes place in the pupil’s final year of school. The Officer conducts individual interviews with identified pupils and makes sure the pupil has an appropriate experience. To help identify suitable placements we discuss the pupils’ interests, past experiences and career aspirations.

An opportunity will fit the timetable of the pupil and the placement could be:

SUBJECT TO COVID RESTRICTIONS

  • An online employability taster session

  • 121 Employability support

  • A one/two day visit to a business

  • Work placement one day a week for 6 weeks

  • Work placement one full week

  • Volunteering

  • Work shadowing

The Senior Phase Officers Employability also support lead teachers to access DYW and Employer engagement initiatives and work with schools to promote various events/online content. The officers will also be able to support the H & S vetting of new placements where appropriate.
